State Supreme Court reverses conviction in child support case

A Rochester man who has been fighting the court system about unpaid child support since 1997 scored a victory with a Minnesota Supreme Court ruling that rested on the meaning of the words "care and support."

Larry Allen Nelson, now 64, had appealed a 2011 felony conviction for nonsupport of spouse or child-excess of 180 days. The statute criminalizes a person's omission and failure "to provide care and support" when court-ordered to do so.
