AUSTIN — The local scenery will never be the same after firefighters completed a controlled burn of the Mower County Fairgrounds Grandstand on Saturday.

"It burned a lot faster than anybody thought it would," said Austin Fire Department Commander Brian Lovik. A combination of old wood and an open venue combined to make that happen, he said. The grandstand was torched after it was deemed last year to be too dangerous to remain standing. Firefighters stepped in to use the demolition as a training exercise with a large structure and a water cannons from ladders. More than 60 firefighters from Mower and Freeborn counties participated.
