As the state of affairs have changed in Afghanistan in the last few years, Thomas Friedman is right on this one. The decision President Obama makes will not be an easy one. His being present at Dover AFB last Thursday to pay honor to those who had fallen is but a visual reminder of what comes next.
If Afghanistan falls again to the Taliban, the rest of world will have to pay up. But the United States cannot be the country that pays the biggest chunk of the cost with more American blood and money.
This has gone far beyond the Taliban or Al-Queda. This is about Afghanistan’s survival as an emerging 21st century nation. The ball is in Karzi’s and the Afghan people’s court now. It is they who have to want to rebuild their country.

I think it’s time to work on America’s survival instead of a foreign nation 1/2 way around the world.
Obama will obey his masters and never leave Afghanistan. He is the perfect puppet.

Goody. More defeatism from the socialist intelligentsia. Obama is running out of time and excuses, particularly now that Afghan presidential candidate Abdulah Abdulah has bowed out of the race.

Looks like somebody woke up on the wrong side of the bed again. But then, what’s new?

“Looks like somebody woke up on the wrong side of the bed again.”
You and feel should try separate beds.

“Looks like somebody woke up on the wrong side of the bed again.”
You and Phil should try separate beds, then.

It was a metaphor, Othelmo! I was not implying who you sleep with.

Mrs_C! Honestly! You must get your head out of the gutter. But then again, you wouldn’t think about Obama as much as you do.

Again, it was a metaphor. A play on words.
Good night, Othelmo. Have a good day tomorrow. My best to you and your family.

Good night, Kathleen. Do not wake up on the left side of the bed again. Regards to Barack, I mean Phil.

MrsC, you have in past posts clearly stated that if you don’t respect history, your doomed to repeat it. Had the US been a larger influence in Afghanistan after Russia left, maybe a 20 year commitment, that country wouldn’t be a war torn third world country today. If we don’t invest in Afghanistan today, it will haunt us tomorrow. A twenty year commitment, twenty years ago could have maybe prevented 3,000+ American lives on 9/11.

I base this conclusion on three principles. First, when I think back on all the moments of progress in that part of the world -- all the times when a key player in the Middle East actually did something that put a smile on my face -- all of them have one thing in common: America had nothing to do with it.
