GOODHUE -- About 14 Lake City area youths got a shot at pheasant hunting last weekend, and some took some birds home.

There were two hunts, the first with about 10 teens at rural Hammond and the second with four teens at the Pheasant View Hunt Club near Goodhue.

The Lake City Environmental Learning Program sponsored the first hunt in the snow and wind Saturday. The Lake City Sportsman's Club sponsored the hunt on Sunday.

Both were aimed at giving more teens a chance to actually hunt. They might go through youth firearms training but some don't have a chance to actually hunt.

The hunts gave them not only the chance, but also the opportunity to hunt with veterans and some good dogs.

WATERFOWL FLIGHT UPDATE: This week's U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service waterfowl survey shows even more ducks, geese and swans moving in.

The survey Monday and Tuesday from below Wabasha well into Iowa found 501,055 waterfowl.

The most was 298,880 canvasback ducks followed by 88,555 bluebills. The number of puddle ducks is dropping with only 39,205 gadwall, 24,955 mallards and 160 wood ducks.

For those wondering, 5,140 swans were counted. Their numbers tend to peak in a few weeks.

TU MEETING: An expert on trout fishing in the Coulee region of southwestern Wisconsin near La Crosse, Wis., will speak at 7 p.m. Monday at the Hiawatha Trout Unlimited meeting at the Izaak Walton League cabin, 937 Seventh Ave. N.E., Rochester.

The talk by John Bethke, who designed the pink squirrel fly, is open to the public.
