Simple things lead to a safer campus
The two young women walking through the Winona State University campus didn't know it, but some simple things like how trees were trimmed and placement of bushes were making them safer.
Trees are trimmed high so no one can hide beneath them, said Don Walski, head of security. And there are no bushes near windows, offering even fewer places for stalkers to hide or peer into the building.
They are some of the changes the university has made that helped it be named in the 11th safest university in the country by the online magazine "The Daily Beast."
Flower shop invests in appearance
A cold October rain didn't stop work on a new retention wall by the Carousel Floral & Gift this week.
The wall is part of Jack Hawkins' $60,000 interior and exterior facelift of his flower shop at the corner of 18th Avenue and 41th Street Northwest.
With floral retail sales down an estimated 25 percent to 40 percent, why is Hawkins spending money to update his store?
"It is an investment in the future," he says.
The Southeastern Minnesota Youth Orchestra, known as SEMYO, will celebrate its 30th anniversary with a "Dancing under the Stars" gala Friday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. at Century High School.
The evening will feature a performance of each of the ensembles that make up SEMYO, from the entry-level symphonic winds and chamber strings to the middle-age group philharmonic orchestra to the advanced concert orchestra.
