Rescue groups hold adoption event

BYRON -- It was obvious that tail wagging and smiles had common meanings during the Rescue Day event at Leashes and Leads on Saturday.

As part of their Rescue Day, more than 40 dogs available for adoption had free roam of the pet store near Byron.

Several rescue organizations from throughout Minnesota brought dogs, hoping to find good homes for them.

Sandy and Norm Cottrell of Wadena, Minn., came to the store to see if they could find a playmate for their 8-year-old pug and beagle mix at home.

RCTC theater to open comedy 'Wonder of the World'

Something told Jerry Casper this isn't the time to get serious, what with the economy still lagging and the shorter, dreary days of November just about upon us.

So, when hunting for a play to produce this fall at Rochester Community & Technical College, Casper went for laughs.

"This one is crazy funny," Casper, director of theater at RCTC, said of his choice, "Wonder of the World," which opens Thursday.

The story is about a woman who discovers a shocking secret about her husband and decides to flee to Niagara Falls to find the life she thinks she missed.

After-school program helps Red Wing students

RED WING -- When First Covenant Church built an addition in 2007, the impact was relatively small in the community. That's no longer the case.

The large facility, which is located a block away from Twin Bluff Middle School, is now home to a new program dubbed "The Remedy." It's designed as a safe haven for middle school students to interact with their peers and receive additional instruction from adults. The program is offered four days a week and has received a positive response after its first week.
