Answer Man aces local baseball history question

10/29/2009 7:25:02 AM

Dear Answer Man, I am searching for the name of the Rochester baseball team in the early 1900s, and the color of their uniforms. My grandfather was a member of the team -- we have a photograph -- and I am interested in knowing more about that early team. -- Romayne Thompson

The History Center of Olmsted County has photos of baseball teams going way back, but archivists say most are of teams clad in lighter colors, and the only notable early team was the Rochester Aces, which started play in the 1920s.

The history center staff would be glad to take a look at your photo, if you'd like, and can scan it for its permanent collection. The History Center is at 1195 W. Circle Drive S.W. Call 282-9447 and ask for the librarian if you want more information.

Baseball was played in Rochester as far as back as the mid-19th century, with the first ballclub organized in 1867, according to the history center. Rochester, Winona and Austin were among other cities represented in the Southern Minnesota League, which began play in 1912 and was a legendary loop.

The Answer Man's head is even bigger than Slider's. Send questions to P.O. Box 6118, Rochester, MN 55903 or answerman@postbulletin.com.
