“By law, the proceeds have to go to the police, state and the prosecuting attorney.”
Another law to benefit lawyers that slipped by without the public knowing about it.
Arresting a man for “sitting in his chair while intoxicated” is another idiotic law. And you wonder why violent criminals are on the loose. Brainless cops chasing down a drunken chair sitter.

birddog, the guy was driving the chair, not just sitting in it. haven’t you seen stories about people getting DWIs while on bikes, lawn mowers and other motorized vehicles??

Why did the police seize his chair, private property. The cops do not seize your car in a drunk driving arrest, why the chair?
If I was arrested for drunk riding on a horse are they going to take that also? What abot a lawn mower, a washing machine or any other mobile appliance? I’m missing something here. Any help?

How dangerous can a guy on a motorized La-Z Boy be? Let the guy keep the chair. What’s next, if he walks home drunk they’ll sell his shoes?

Again, more laws that nobody was told about. The secrecy of the government passing laws and then saying “gotcha” is getting worse every day. You can now be arrested for DWI while on roller skates or a wash tub on wheels. It’s a nice money maker for the government and insurance companies, but has nothing to do with protecting us from someone slamming into our semi while on skates. More government idiocy. The problem is, is that we allow them to get by with it.
I can’t wait to see if the arresting officer gets the medal of valor for this.

In MN, certain types of DUIs can result in forfeiture of the vehicle. For example, if the alcohol is over a certain level, if you’ve had a previous DUI within a certain amount of time, if there is a child in the vehicle, etc. His motorized chair crashed into a parked car.

Birddog not sure where you got your law degree but in the state of Mn the key is motorized vehicle. washtub doesn’t count unless you put a motor on it. Chair drunk driver is obviously a repeat DUI driver, as a first or second time DUI does not result in vehicle forfeiture.

The more I think about this the more fired up I become. What is the point of confiscating this guys recliner?
How do the police expect this man to get back and forth from home to the bar and back? He obviously can’t drive his car, that would be against the law.
Where do they expect him to sit at home, on the floor?
He can’t power up the couch, have you ever tried driving a naugahyde sectional down the street? Impossible to stay in your lane.
If they won’t give him back his chair at least split the money with him maybe he can power up a nice footstool or outfit an engine on an endtable.

Were all of the occupants killed or just badly injured?
I know that when I’m driving down the city street at 30 mph, I’m terrified at seeing a La-Z-Boy lounge chair coming at me at 2 mph.

It’s those motorized Lane recliners that tear up the streets. They’ve been clocked in EXCESS of 2 mph.

I know this story borders on the absurd, but the “vehicle” is capable of going 20 mph, which could inflict damage on a parked car. Sounds like he is a repeat offender who tried to work a way around the system.

Yes people, it is real. The forfeiture laws allow for conffiscation of just about any private property involve in a whole bunch of different feloney levely crimes.
There are thresholds etc that must be met, but they are being lowered and law enforcement are finding more ways to take property. They can take it just because you were charged, before being found guilty, and it becomes your fight to get it back. Rarely happens or if you do you have to pay the value to the cops.
You might have your first DUI be an aggrevated. .20 or over and loose your vehicle. You still owe the loan company but a week later the cops are driving it as an under cover car. They love Dodge Durangos for some reason, Olmsted county has several in their fleet. So if you have one, don’t drive drunk, aside from the ticket they just take your veh too.

Right!! We must spend thousands of dollars protecting the public from these dangerous vehicles. Maybe they should have an “arm chair weekend” there and call in fifty or sixty State Troopers and County Deputies to assist.

Are you accusing him of being a politician?
It does not border on the absurd, it is in fact absurd.
