Help for young farmers

Kathleen Merrigan, the U.S. Department of Agriculture deputy secretary, announced $17 million in grants Tuesday aimed at helping young farmers.

She announced the Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program grants in front at least 60 people at the diversified farm of Eric and Lisa Klein outside of Elgin.

Samaritan Bethany expansion approved

A final plan to expand Samaritan Bethany's senior housing campus near downtown Rochester won unanimous city council approval on Monday.

The plan calls for adding two additions on the campus just west of the Super America store at Seventh Street and North Broadway. Construction might start as soon as December.

Celebration of raptor migration

The annual migration of raptors down the Mississippi River will be celebrated three weekends in November at the National Eagle Center in Wabasha beginning Saturday.

Each year, hundreds of thousands of raptors, waterfowl and other birds migrate down the river valley.
