1979 -- 30 years ago

A third-year Mayo Medical School student is among a group of 15 medical personnel leaving for the Cambodian refugee camps in Thailand. Patricia Walker, who speaks the Thai language, will leave with six doctors, seven nurses and a paramedic.

1949 -- 60 years ago

The police department planned to stop a motorist today to give the driver a letter from the traffic safety committee naming the person the "most courteous" driver of the day. Six other drivers will receive this award as part of Courtesy and Safe Driving Week.

The Rochester National Guard held an emergency home-protection maneuver simulating a storm disaster. Within 90 minutes, 60 members of the company had responded and were patrolling the business area, guarding banks and roaming the city in jeeps.

1919 -- 90 years ago

The anniversary of the signing of the armistice, ending World War I, will be observed at Calvary Church. The service flag that has hung in the church for the past two years will be taken down and will be placed for preservation within the altar of the church. The sermon will be "Bomb-Proof Faith."

Mayor C.D. Brown shut down the city's steam electric plant and turned on current from the Zumbro Power Dam. An impressive ceremony marked this epoch in Rochester.
