Skyrocket with science

Astronaut Bernard Harris has logged almost 200 hours in space, completed 129 orbits of earth, and traveled more than 2.9 million miles.

But without science, technology, engineering and math, he would have never gotten off the ground.

He was the keynote speaker at the second-annual STEM summit which drew more than 1,500 area students on Thursday.

Dreaming of a warm winter?

Southeastern Minnesota should have a warm winter, thanks to the El Nino phenomenon, according to the National Weather Service.

But don't think of this as North Florida.

Mayo developing 'guardian angel'

Mayo Clinic is testing a remote health monitor device, or "guardian angel," it developed with a Swiss company that could snag a piece of what is estimated to be a multimillion market.

STMicroelectronics, which has engineers in Rochester working with doctors, is collaborating with Mayo on a device that monitors a patient's heart rate, blood pressure, activity levels and breathing.

Hope for commuters

Future commuter rail corridors in Rochester have been tentatively mapped and will be on display Monday in a public open house to start the long process of updating the area's long-range transportation plan.

Traffic congestion, along with rising fuel costs, will push many commuters to mass transit, planners believe. The routes will be "feeder corridors" from Rochester's outer ring to downtown.
