1979 -- 30 years ago

A new IBM computer system that speeds intra- and inter-office communications was partially developed at the Rochester plant. The new system is known as the 5520 Administrative System. The purchase price for a typical 5520 package will be $64,000.

There will be a grand opening of the remodeled Erdman's Super Value Store in Kasson. There will be daily prizes and many grocery specials.

In city elections, Lake City elected its first female mayor, Marylou Beckman, and St. Charles elected its first female council member, Dee Hass.

1949 -- 60 years ago

The Navy is seeking registered nurses. Qualified graduate nurses will be appointed with a rank of an ensign and paid $213.75 per month.

Toys for the convalescent child will be a special exhibit at Rochester Public Library this week.

For the first time in Rochester, regular classes have been set up for children who are polio patients. They are being taught at Saint Marys Hospital by Ida Staehling. There are nine students who are enrolled in the program, and they will meet in a special room provided by the hospital.

1919 -- 90 years ago

Rochester has organized a new orchestra comprised of seven local musicians. Arthur Back will play flute, and Glen Cooke will be on the string bass. The orchestra, under the direction of Harold Cooke, will make its first appearance at the Methodist church.

Dr. C.H. Mayo delivered an address on "The Responsibility of School Authorities" at a meeting of the Minnesota Educational Association.
