Passing the mulch

Gray earth in the waterlogged field blended with the somber late October sky as Sandy Dietz poked holes into a raised row of soil.

When she made about 100 holes with a rake handle, she bent down and pushed a clove of garlic into each. In all, she would poke about 21,000 holes and plant that many cloves.

The summer has been hectic for her, her husband, Lonny Dietz, their family and workers at Whitewater Gardens Farm -- planting, weeding, harvesting, selling, harvesting, weeding, selling, planning, trying to control weeds and blights, washing lettuce and carrots.

That work on that land, however, is more than something to relax Sandy and provide income.

It's a way for the couple to reach out, to teach others about what they have learned in more than 20 years of farming organically.

High-energy food drive

It might have hurt and they had less hair by the end of it, but the LeRoy-Ostrander school principal and athletic director can say they served their community.

As part of the first-ever local Tyson Student Food Drive, a national competition that challenges high school students to get creative about collecting food donations for local food shelves, students at LeRoy-Ostrander school devised the game "Waxing for a Cause." They won second place for most spirit in the competition that attracted more than 20 area high schools.

For the competition, a collection box was set up in the school's commons for each of the six men who work there. Whoever had the most canned food in their box at the end of a week would have his legs waxed at a school assembly Oct. 30. A total of 216.8 pounds of food was brought in for Channel One Food Bank with Principal Aaron Hungerholt and Jason Jude, the athletic director, tied for first place.

Seasonal vaccine available

The Target Clinic at the south-side Target superstore in Rochester has received a batch of seasonal flu vaccine.

About 150 doses are available for healthy individuals ages 2 to 49. Also, a "very limited" number of doses for children ages 18 to 35 months is available -- of seasonal flu vaccine only.
