CANNON FALLS -- Motorists might encounter delays on U.S. 52 and Minnesota Highway 20 north of Cannon Falls as two railroad crossings are being used once again.

Progressive Rail based in Lakeville, Minn., will be running trains through the crossings again after it signed contracts with Fairmount Mineral in Cannon Falls.

Up to two trains per day will use these crossings as they make their way to and from Cannon Falls.

The two railroad crossings were never formally taken out of service, but they haven't been used for almost five years.

"Getting people to not rear-end each other is our biggest concern," MnDOT's Railroad Administration project manager Jim Weatherhead said. "A top of the line warning system will be installed."

The new warning devices will include gates and flashing lights; however, until the installation of these warning devices has been completed, the railroad crossings will be monitored by train crews who will be flagging trains across the highways.

Message signs will also be in place for approximately the first 30 days of operation to give motorists advance warning of potential train traffic.

The trains will run during daylight hours, between approximately 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Motorists also are also reminded to be aware of vehicles such as buses and trucks carrying hazardous loads that need to stop at the tracks every time before crossing.
