STEWARTVILLE 27 OT

Tigers just miss the upset

LA CRESCENT -- Seventh-seeded Stewartville came up an extra point short in its bid to upset No. 2 La Crescent in the quarterfinal round of the Section One, Class AAA football tournament.

La Crescent edged Stewartville 28-27 in overtime, and the only thing that separated the teams was Stewartville's missed point-after-touchdown kick attempt.

Stewartville had a 14-7 lead entering the fourth quarter, but La Crescent took a 21-14 lead with 2:02 remaining. Jude Williams scored on a 6-yard run, one play after Troy Traxler broke a 32-yard run to set up the score.

Stewartville was able to answer that touchdown with a 10-play, 56-yard drive. Tyler Rogers scored on a 5-yard pass from Steve Jezeski with 27 seconds left, and Alex Hain converted his third PAT kick to tie the score and force OT.

The Tigers scored first in the OT on its third play, a 7-yard pass from Jeseski to Rogers. But Hain's all-important PAT kick sailed wide left this time.

La Crescent (8-1) scored on its first play, a 10-yard run by Williams. Zach Hoppenworth-Pederson then won the game with his good PAT kick.

Stewartville won the total yardage battle, 356-280. Hain had a big game rushing with 35 carries for 153 yards. Jezeski completed 10 of 21 passes for 97 yards. Stewartville finished 2-7.

For the Lancers, Williams had 116 yards rushing on 27 carries. Sophomore quarterback Troy Traxler, in his second game back from a broken leg, was 12-of-17 for 133 yards passing.

No. 7 Stewartville 0 7 7 7 6 -- 27

No. 2 La Crescent 0 7 0 14 7 -- 28
