MINNEAPOLIS Rochester advanced two singles players and a doubles team to the semifinals of the respective state girls tennis tournaments on Thursday.
In the state Class AA tournament at the University of Minnesota's Baseline Tennis Center, Century's Kelsey Frechette advanced with a 6-3, 6-3 win in the first round and a 6-3, 6-4 win in the semifinals.
| What happened: Century's Kelsey Frechette and Lourdes' Courtney Rust advanced to their respective Class AA and A state girls tennis tournament semifinals in singles. In doubles, the Century combination of Mary Ellen Donovan and Jori Kircher also reached the semifinals.
What's next: Frechette, Rust and the doubles team of Donovan and Kircher play at 8 a.m. in today's semifinals. Finals are at 11:30 a.m. The Class AA meet is at the University of Minnesota's Baseline Tennis Center, and the Class A meet is at Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis. | ||
Frechette, a sophomore, was to face Maple Grove eighth-grader Patty Zhao in Friday's 8 a.m. semifinals. A win there would likely bring on a meeting with No. 1 ranked and defending state champion Aria Lambert of Minnetonka in the 11:30 a.m. finals.
In doubles, Century's Mary Ellen Donovan and Jori Kircher won their first two matches to advance to the semifinals. They won 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the first round, then 6-0, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. They play Caroline Ward and Mollie Meldahl of Edina in Friday's 8 a.m. semifinals.
In the state Class A tournament at Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center, Lourdes' Courtney Rust reached the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-0 win in the first round and a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 win in the quarterfinals. Waiting for Rust in Friday's 8 a.m. semifinals is No. 1 ranked Taylor Washington of Mounds Park Academy.
• Mayo singles player Emilie Renault fell in the first round to defending state champion Lambert. In doubles, the Mayo combination of Jacqueline Cliby and Paige Becher fell in the quarterfinals.
• Lourdes' doubles team of Brittany Alexander and Margaret Pearson also fell in the quarterfinals.
