LA CRESCENT -- Jude Williams and defense.
Those were the key elements in La Crescent's 28-14 victory over Plainview-Elgin-Millville in a Section One, Class AAA high school football playoff semifinal game Saturday night.
Williams was the only Lancer -- aside from quarterback Troy Traxler -- to carry the ball. He did so 29 times, netting 192 yards, including two short touchdown runs in the second quarter.
He also completed a pass for 31 yards.
Traxler completed 12 of 24 passes for 152 yards, including a short touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter that put La Crescent ahead by two touchdowns.
The Lancers' defense was strong in the second half after yielding PEM a pair of first-half touchdowns, on passes of 13 and 32 yards from Clay Olstad to his brother Cole.
The Bulldogs got past midfield only once in the second half, on their final possession of the game when they trailed by 14. They reached the 15-yard line, but an interception ended the drive.
La Crescent held PEM's duo of Blaine Miller and Jack Ihrke -- who combined for over 270 yards rushing in Tuesday's quarterfinal victory -- to 41 and 26 respectively.
In total yardage, La Crescent led 384-255, with 201 on the ground and 183 through the air. PEM rushed for 97 yards and passed for 158 as Clay Olstad threw 35 times, completing 13 with one interception.
La Crescent's field was in good condition because of drying winds through the day.
