Red Wing senior Rose Alleva was offered 35 scholarships to play Division I women's hockey. She decided last week to turn her back on those opportunities. Instead, she accepted a full academic scholarship -- worth roughly $60,000 a year -- to play at Princeton University.

Ivy League schools do not offer athletic scholarships, but Alleva is also a straight-A student.

Alleva, who joined Red Wing's varsity hockey program when she was in seventh grade, has become one of the top defensive players in the state and, arguably, the nation. She posted 50 points (28 goals, 22 assists) in the 2008-09 season en route to earning all-state honors.

She helped guide the Wingers to the program's first state tournament appearance last year, where they placed third. She was named to the all-tournament team and was the Class A selection for the Herb Brooks Award. Alleva is widely considered a top candidate for the Minnesota Ms. Hockey Award in the upcoming season.

Red Wing's first game is Nov. 17 at Hastings.
