Duke guard suspended two games
DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke guard Nolan Smith will sit out two games because he played in an unsanctioned summer league.
Smith said Tuesday night after the Blue Devils' 84-48 exhibition victory over Findlay that he was suspended because he played a game with overseas players and professionals over the summer near his hometown of Washington, D.C.
The junior will miss the opener against North Carolina-Greensboro on Nov. 13 and a game three nights later against Coastal Carolina. He didn't play in the first half against Findlay so his teammates could adjust to playing without him.
The Blue Devils already have a thin backcourt -- Smith and senior Jon Scheyer are the only returning guards with significant experience. Smith averaged 8.4 points last season.
DII Le Moyne stuns Syracuse
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Christopher Johnson scored 17 of his 22 points in the second half, including a 3-pointer with 8.3 seconds remaining, and Division II Le Moyne stunned Syracuse 82-79 in an exhibition game Tuesday night.
Wes Johnson, who led Syracuse with 34 points, hit a 3 from the left corner to put Syracuse ahead 79-78 with 22 seconds left. Christopher Johnson responded with his sixth 3-pointer of the game, which came from the left side off a broken play.
After Wes Johnson missed a 3, Can Ozkaner added a free throw with 1.3 seconds left for Le Moyne.
Andy Rautins had 13 points and Rick Jackson finished with 10 points and eight rebounds for the Orange, who led by as many as 10 early in the second half.
Bing re-elected as Detroit mayor
DETROIT -- Professional basketball Hall of Famer Dave Bing has been re-elected Detroit mayor.
The 65-year-old Democrat defeated accountant Tom Barrow in Tuesday's nonpartisan general election.
Bing's NBA career lasted 12 seasons, nine with the Detroit Pistons.
As mayor, he has laid off workers and demanded a 10 percent wage cut to help address the city's ongoing budget deficit.
It was the fourth time Detroit voters cast ballots this year for mayor.
Bing received the most votes in a February primary and defeated incumbent Ken Cockrel Jr. in a May runoff to complete Kwame Kilpatrick's second term. Kilpatrick resigned as part of pleas in two criminal cases.
Bing also received the most votes in the August primary.
Griner dunk-free in first game
WACO, Texas -- Baylor freshman phenom Brittney Griner had 13 points, four rebounds and three blocked shots while playing 19 minutes in the seventh-ranked Lady Bears' exhibition opener Tuesday night, a 97-43 victory over St. Edwards.
All that was missing was a dunk.
More than 6,000 people attended the exhibition game hoping to see the 6-foot-8 Griner dunk the basketball like she did throughout high school in Houston, and seen worldwide on YouTube. She never attempted a slam.
Griner started the game and had seven points, two blocks and a steal in the first 10 minutes. She also played the first 9:15 of the second half.
Senior Melissa Jones led Baylor with 20 points on 8-of-8 shooting with three 3-pointers.
