EAST SUBSECTION 1AA
Caledonia 3, Chatfield 2
Caledonia has called Amber Sorenson's number often this season when it needs a kill at a crucial point in a match.
Wednesday night was no different, as the Warriors went to Sorenson four times at key stages of the decisive fifth game of the East Subsection 1AA championship match.Sorenson recorded four of her match-high 23 kills in the final game, as Caledonia (29-4) held off a Chatfield rally to win 25-17, 25-22, 21-25, 14-25, 15-9.
"She's 6-foot-1, has a great jump and a great arm swing," Warriors coach Scott Koepke said, "so, yeah, we're going to go to her."
Sorenson dominated the first two games, recording six kills in each. Chatfield adjusted its block and its intensity in games three and four had Caledonia reeling. The Gophers rallied behind the strong play of Emily Miller, Morgan Bushman, Emily VonWald and Kenna Moechnig.
"They had more intensity and we lost some energy," Sorenson said. "In the last game, we knew what was at stake and we were able to bring that same intensity we had in the first two games."
Chatfield finishes its season with a 24-6 record. Caledonia advances to the section final for the third consecutive season, despite having just two seniors on its roster.
"We're still a young team and a lot of these kids haven't been in this environment," Koepke said. "They're learning how to close out matches. This is a real confidence-builder for a lot of the girls."
