Just because the Rochester Century volleyball has never played in a section championship match before, that doesn't mean the Panthers never expected to get here.
Top-seeded Century plowed its way into the finals of the Section One, Class AAA tournament with an impressive 3-0 win over fourth-seeded Northfield in a semifinal match Thursday night at the Century gym.
"Amazing! unbelievable!" shrieked Century's Brittany Weidman, after the Panthers' 25-13, 25-19, 25-16 win.
Century (22-6) will face No. 2 seed Farmington (16-6) in the section final at 7 p.m. Saturday at Mayo Civic Center Taylor Arena. Both teams are vying for their first trip to state.
Weidman, a junior, and senior Kathryn Kuecker are both third-year players on Century's varsity. They remember the Panthers' section quarterfinal loss to Farmington two years ago, and the 3-0 loss to Owatonna in the semifinals last year.
"This was our goal, to get to the section final, and we made it," Kuecker said.
"It's been my dream forever to play at the state tournament," Weidman said. "Now we're one win away."
