Lynx get top pick in draft

NEW YORK -- The Minnesota Lynx will have the top pick in next year's WNBA draft.

The Sacramento Monarchs, who finished with a league-low 12 wins this year, received the second pick in the draft lottery Thursday, followed by the Connecticut Sun, the Lynx again with the fourth pick, and the Chicago Sky.

Minnesota has two lottery picks because it received New York's first-round selection in a three-team trade on May 5 that also involved Los Angeles. The No. 1 pick ended up being the one the Lynx got from the Liberty.

The remaining draft order is San Antonio, Washington, Tulsa, Los Angeles and Atlanta.

Seattle, Indiana and the Sparks round out the final first-round picks in the 13-team draft.

The draft date has not been announced.

MEN'S HOCKEY

Barriball out for year

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota men's hockey team will be without its most accomplished scorer for the rest of the season.

The school says senior Jay Barriball will have season-ending knee surgery on Friday. Barriball was injured during practice on Tuesday.

Barriball has two goals and two assists this season and scored his 100th career point in a win over Alaska-Anchorage last week. He has 43 more career points than any other Gopher on the current roster.

The former Holy Angels star is eligible for a medical redshirt. That leaves open the possibility that he could return next season.

The Gophers host rival Wisconsin this weekend.

Gophers rout Duluth

MINNEAPOLIS -- Damian Johnson had 16 points, 10 rebounds and seven steals to lead No. 25 Minnesota to a 114-47 win over Minnesota Duluth in an exhibition game Thursday night.

Lawrence Westbrook, the other senior in Minnesota's starting lineup, scored 19 points.

With suspended newcomers Trevor Mbakwe and Royce White watching in shirts and ties, the Gophers missed some muscle inside but that didn't matter. The Bulldogs made just one trip to the free-throw line.

Freshman Rodney Williams, had eight points, two steals and one soaring dunk over the final five minutes of the first half.
