Help our Austin schools maintain their 'winners' status

10/23/2009 7:00:02 AM

In 1970, our family moved, beginning our involvement in the Austin school district. it was evident then our community took pride in and supported the academics and activities within our schools.

My three children were involved in various studies and activities. They were motivated and inspired by a team of educators both inside and outside the classroom. My family and I have witnessed firsthand community support from attendance at concerts and athletic events, to the creation of our school song, which states: "Winners we will always be."

Almost 40 years later, the same pride and support are still evident.

We have a strong tradition of placing an emphasis on student learning and achievement. Our graduation rates continue to improve; many of our test scores are above the state average. Our teachers are learning the latest teaching methods through the University of Minnesota Fellowship Program.

Our staff has written grants equaling $7 million and several employees have volunteered to take a pay freeze due to the economy. The district's finances are sound as our levy ranks below the Big 9 and the state average. Our schools and programs continue to grow.

Our high school students have access to the finest science labs anywhere, and when the Ellis renovation is complete, our middle school students will have the same.

I respectfully ask for your continuing support of our children and our programs in the upcoming referendum. Please support our students so that we may continue in our tradition of excellence and maintain our "Winners We Will Always Be" status.
