Keep quality schools for next generation

10/26/2009 6:25:01 AM

It is important that our schools have some long-term stability in their economic planning.

Recent cuts in state aid, with enrollments stable or growing, will lead to a major financial crisis, both in the short term and in the long term, without stronger financial backing.

There is, therefore, a referendum on the ballot for a 10-year levy, replacing two previous levies, soon to expire, and replacing some of the lost state funding.

I spend my time at the medical center and in some volunteer work at the Hormel Institute and am well aware how a strong local school system is important for community development and for economic progress. My children went through the public schools here in Austin and benefited well from those schools. I feel that we should provide an economic basis for the next generations to have the same quality schools.

I would, therefore, strongly encourage a Yes vote on the upcoming referendum.
