All one has to do is look at the face of Renee Walz, mother of homicide victim Ryan Nissalke, in the Oct. 13 edition of the Post-Bulletin to see one of extreme pain and suffering.
Then look at Page 1 at the pictures of the murderers of her son and ask: "What is happening? Where is the justice?" Our legal system has strayed so far from the concept of justice we can no longer see the lady with the scales, even with binoculars. From reading the story and from observing a general trend in society it would seem that three conclusions are obvious.
1. We are unable to convict the guilty, so we have to plea-bargain.
2. Prisons are so full that the murderers will serve only two thirds of their time. In this instance, it is anticipated they will be on the streets in 10 years.
3. There is no justice with our legal system.
As one devoted to saving and improving lives, it is really difficult to observe a system so essential to our society that has become so dysfunctional.
