Walz wrong on public option

10/29/2009 7:20:02 AM

Congressman Walz wants us to believe he has secured Mayo Clinic and all providers a great victory in the pending reform legislation.

He is disingenuous or simply believes we are not smart enough to follow what is going on. He claims that inclusion of language supporting payment reform now allows him to support a public insurance option. Please! The payment reforms are included in the form of a "study with recommendations;" classic language for issues Congress does not want to address in the current bill.

There have been plenty of demonstration projects already which demonstrate the need for payment for reform. Why does Congressman Walz believe we need additional study?

Concerning the public option, there is no logic to link it directly to payment reform; if there where, maybe it should be deferred until the payment reform study is completed. But no, he is willing to move forward on this controversial element of the plan. If the public option is tied to Medicare reimbursement, it will be another "cram down" similar to what was imposed on the automotive and banking industries.

Health care is not cars or checking accounts. We are on the precipice of a nightmare for providers, physicians and patients.
