Vote 'yes' to maintain Byron's high-quality school system

10/31/2009 6:50:02 AM

On Tuesday the Byron school district is asking taxpayers to vote on a new operating referendum, which is needed to enable the district to maintain current programs.

For this current school year, our district has reduced our budget by $500,000, increased class sizes, eliminated some positions, reduced budgets, reduced bus stops and increased athletic fees. At the end of last year, teachers voted to give back 50 percent of the staff development dollars and signed a two-year contract with a soft freeze.

With that said, the Byron Education Association, along with our school district, has much to be proud of! Our graduation rate was at 99 percent last year, we have made Adequate Yearly Progress for the past six years, our ACT scores are the highest they have ever been, and our MCA II scores were some of the highest in the surrounding school districts!

The Byron Education Association recognizes that times are tough. However, we believe in our schools, take pride in our programs and want the best for students.

We are committed to providing the best education possible for our students. To that end, we endorse the school board's recommendation for a five-year operating referendum at $504.40 per pupil, replacing the $126.10 per pupil, because it preserves the high-quality education that our community has taken pride in over the years.
