Duplicate Bridge Club

On Oct. 28, five tables were played. Finishing first (tie) were Larry Crowe and Dick Hansen, and Dave Ring and Orrion Roisen; third -- Bud Higgins and Loren Cleland. Fourth -- Belva Fiala and Lu Schmitt.

The club meets at 12:30 p.m. Wednesdays at the Mower County Senior Center in Austin. All bridge players are welcome. For information, call Dave Ring at 434-4189.

Veterans appreciation event held

Veterans, spouses, and military buffs gathered recently at the American Legion in St. Ansgar, Iowa, for the sixth annual Veteran Appreciation Day.

Among the vets in attendance were 20 from the World War II era, 19 from the Korea era, and 10 from the Vietnam era. They came from cities throughout Minnesota and Iowa, and even as far away as Stapleton, Neb.

Kiwanis supports early childhood literacy

Members of the Golden K Kiwanis Club present Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) staff members a check for $300 in support of the parent lending library. The Golden K Club is a longtime supporter of the ECFE program and parent lending library.

Employee appreciation event held

On Nov. 5 Austin Public Schools hosted its first 2009-10 luncheon to honor those employees and independent contributors who have made extraordinary contributions to the district's aims and goals.

Schumann graduates from Coast Guard training

• Coast Guard Seaman Apprentice Hannah V. Schumann recently graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Recruit Training Center in Cape May, N.J. A 2009 graduate of LeRoy-Ostrander High School, Schumann is the daughter of Sue J. Schumann of LeRoy and Marc R. Schumann of Phoenix.
