January's Golden Globe awards just got funnier, because comic genius and perpetual scene-stealer Ricky Gervais has agreed to host.
Gervais, who typically gets the biggest laughs as a presenter on major awards shows every season, has resisted offers to host other ceremonies in the past. But "there are just some things you don't turn down," he said. The Globes are a good fit for Gervais, since the crowd tends to be a bit more raucous.
At last year's Globes, he cracked a joke about best supporting actress winner Kate Winslet, who won for her role in The Reader. "What did I tell you, Winslet? Do a Holocaust movie, win an award," he said onstage. "That's the trouble with Holocaust films: There's no gag reel on the DVD."
This will be the first time the Globes has had a host since 1995. The awards show will be broadcast live on NBC Jan. 17. Nominations will be announced Dec. 15.
