Exhibit features magazine covers
RED WING -- Eight pulp magazine cover paintings are on display as "Hard Boiled Art" at Red Wing Framing & Fine Art Printing.
The paintings are from 1939 to 1965 and from magazines The Shadow, Detective Story and Men's Adventure. Artists include George Rozen, John Coughlin and Mort Kunstler.
Pulp magazine cover art was often lurid and provocative, featuring tough hoodlums battling detectives.
Scantily clad women were also standard.
The exhibition opens Friday and continues through Dec. 5.

Band will recreate 'Troubled Water'
ZUMBROTA -- The band Collective Unconscious will reprise Simon & Garfunkel's classic album "Bridge Over Troubled Water" at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 14 at the State Theatre in Zumbrota.
The band will be accompanied by an 18-piece orchestra to recreate the entire album, note for note.
Collective Unconscious has previously performed concerts of the Beatles'"Abbey Road" and the Beach Boys'"Pet Sounds."
Songs from "Bridge Over Troubled Water" include "The Boxer, "El Condor Pasa" and "Cecilia."

Show pays tribute to country stars
The legendary ladies of country music will be on the stage of the Rochester Civic Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Stephanie Erdman, with the Legends Band, will perform the music of Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Dottie West and Patsy Cline. Erdman is an Albert Lea native who has performed since she was a child.

Voting continues in battle of bands
The local rock band Chester Bay is still in a battle for the top spot in a national battle of the bands sponsored by Land Shark lager.
Online voting continues through Nov. 23 at www.landsharkrocks.com.
The winning band will receive a promotional prize pack valued at more than $100,000, including a full-page Land Shark ad in Rolling Stone magazine, a digital distribution deal and promotional support.
'Nightmare' continues in Spring Valley
SPRING VALLEY -- Vertigo Theatre Company will present "Actor's Nightmare" in a dinner-theater setting at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Friends Center for the Arts, 123 S. Broadway, Spring Valley.
The comedy is about an actor who takes to the stage but has no clue what his role is or what lines to say. Tickets are $20, available at Don's Family Market, or by phone at (507) 951-4394.
Bus trip includes lecture, tour
Rochester Friends of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts will take a bus trip to Minneapolis Nov. 12 for a lecture and tour.
The group will hear Isabelle Lemaistre, curator of the current Louvre exhibit talk about "What Makes a Masterpiece?" Following lunch, the group will tour the Museum of Russian Art.
The bus leaves at 8:30 a.m. from the Ramada Hotel, 1517 16th St. S.W., Rochester, and will return in the late afternoon. Fee is $30 for non-members, $25 for members. There is an extra $5 fee for the Russian art museum. For reservations, call 288-1093.
Concert, film on tap at Oak Center
OAK CENTER -- Paddy Keenan and John Walsh will perform the music of Ireland in concert at 8 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Oak Center General Store. Keenan, known as "the Jimi Hendrix of the pipes," helped revitalize Irish traditional music as a member of the Both Band in the 1970s. He will be joined by fellow Irishman John Walsh, a guitarist from County Kilkenny. Tickets are $15, with patrons paying what they can afford down to a minimum of $5. Also coming up at Oak Center is the film, "The Journey Back," about a group of veterans returning to Vietnam to build schools and drill drinking wells. The film is at 4:30 p.m., Nov. 15, followed by a potluck supper at 6 p.m. and a concert by Winona singer/songwriter Chris Kendall. Tickets are $5 to $15.
Doofus returns for holiday show
If Doofus is here, the Christmas holiday season can't be far behind.
Ozark Jubilee's Branson Country Christmas, starring Doofus Doolittle, returns Nov. 12 to Mayo Civic Center. There'll be plenty of hillbilly humor, holiday songs, and dancing in a revue-style show.
Showtime is 2 p.m. Tickets are $27, available at the civic center box office and through Ticketmaster at www.ticketmaster.com and (800) 745-3000.
Deck the halls with tours of Mayowood
The Historic Mayowood Mansion is all decked out in its holiday finest and ready to swing open its doors for the annual Christmas tours, which begin Friday and run through Nov. 22.
Individuals, clubs and businesses have decorated rooms in the 38-room mansion, which is part of the Mayowood Estate, built in Rochester between 1911 and 1938 by Dr. Charles H. Mayo.
The mansion, which is a Minnesota Historic Site, is maintained by the History Center of Olmsted County.
A complete list of tour times is available at the history center's Web site.
The approximately two-hour tours are led by guides and docents.
There are light refreshments and a gift shop in the gallery.
For daytime tours, arrive at the history center 45 minutes before the tour time for an orientation film and to view new exhibits.
Advance registration is required for evening tours.
Meet at the mansion 15 minutes before the tour time.
Admission is $15, $5 for children ages 12 and younger. Tickets are available at the History Center, 1195 West Circle Drive S.W., Rochester.
Concert benefits music programs
The Northwestern Singers and local school choirs will perform a benefit concert, "Why We Sing," at 7 p.m. Saturday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin.
Proceeds from the concert go to support school music programs.
To date, the Northwestern Singers have given $25,000 to the programs.
Also performing will be the Irish Minstrels.
Tickets are $8, available at Hy-Vee in Austin, St. Edward's Church and from choir members.
