Richard A. O'Brien -- Red Wing

RED WING -- The funeral service for Richard A. O'Brien will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Red Wing, with Father Thomas M. Kommers officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Red Wing.

Mr. O'Brien, 76, of Red Wing, died early Monday morning, Nov. 2, 2009, at Fairview Seminary Home in Red Wing.

Richard Allen O'Brien was born April 24, 1933, in Lake City to James and Dorothy (Howatt) O'Brien. He attended school in Mount Pleasant Township in Wabasha County, and attended the University of Minnesota School of Agriculture. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Richard was a lifetime dairy farmer.

On Oct. 3, 1959, he married Mary Ann Wohlers; they proudly celebrated sharing 50 years of marriage in October.

Richard was an accordion instructor for many years and played in numerous polka and country-western bands in the area. He loved doing mechanical work, auto-body work and carpenter work. Family was always first with Richard, and he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. Richard was a very patient, kind and gentle man with a heart of gold. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Red Wing.

Richard is survived by his wife, Mary Ann O'Brien of Red Wing; three daughters, Laurie (Terry) Meacham and Patricia O'Brien, both of Red Wing, and Mary Kay (Todd) Gilbert of Apple Valley, Minn.; two sons, Michael (Lisa) O'Brien and Steven O'Brien, both of Red Wing; seven grandchildren; and one brother, Jerry O'Brien of Lake City. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends and relatives may visit one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
