What is NIE?

Newspaper in Education is a partnership between the Post-Bulletin and area schools and classrooms. NIE provides curriculum support through materials, special resources, classroom presentations, teacher workshops and inservices. We serve over 250 public and private schools in southeastern Minnesota.

Some of the special projects, services and materials NIE provides for educators are:
  • Pigskin Geography
  • Slam Jam Geography
  • Serial Stories — fall, winter and summer
  • Design-An-Ad
  • Earth Day, Every Day, Pass It On!
  • Thursday NIE Youth News Page
  • Monthly newsletter "NIE Headlines"
  • Subject-specific curriculum
  • Classroom presentations
  • Teacher workshops & inservices
  • Teacher of the Month Award Program
  • Post-Bulletin plant tours for grades 4-12

Since 1994, three organizations have joined with NIE to provide sponsorship money to schools for newspaper subscriptions. The organizations are the Rochester American Legion Wm. T. McCoy Post 92, the Rochester VFW Whitlock-Sonnenberg Post 1215 and Olmsted County Voiture of the 40 & 8. Their generous support has enabled hundreds of students throughout southeastern Minnesota to receive newspapers and related materials.

In some cases, we offer full sponsorship money to cover a classroom's newspaper order costs. For many more, we are able to subsidize the cost of their newspapers to fit into their budgets. NIE offers schools a special rate of just 12¢ per paper for Monday through Friday newspapers and 44¢ for the Saturday paper. Curriculum materials are provided free of charge with newspapers.
