Esther L. Smith, 86, of Rochester, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012, at Madonna Towers.

The Bay City, Michigan native was born Oct. 7, 1926, to George and Martha (Starke) Eichinger, who preceded her in death. Esther married Dale O. Smith on June 24, 1950. She was a former resident of Michigan, Indiana and moved to Rochester in 2008.

She was member of Grace Lutheran Church and served on various committees and service projects there. Esther enjoyed cooking and sewing.

In addition to her parents, Esther was preceded in death by her brothers, Ed, Herb, Arnie and Bernard Eichinger, and her daughter-in-law, Sandy Smith.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Dale Smith, of Rochester; her children, Dan Smith, of Ft. Pierce Fla., Cathy (Bob) Girard, of Elkhart Ind., Rick Smith, of Big Rapids Mich., Marianne Bigelow, of Elkhart Ind., and Tracy (Bob) Decklever, of Byron; grandchildren, Ben (Courtney) Miller, of Elkhart Ind., Angie (Scott) Herman, of St. Louis Mo., Jocelyn (Thomas) Krueter, of Elkhart Ind., Jacob Decklever, of Byron, Claire Decklever, of Byron and Alyssa Sherrill, of Elkhart Ind.; great-grandchildren, Kailyn Krueter, Camden Krueter and Dominic Miller, all of Elkhart; and her brother, George (Betty) Eichinger, of Bay City Mich.

Esther was buried in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Indiana.

Memorial services will be held locally at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at Grace Lutheran Church, 800 E. Silver Lake Drive in Rochester.

The family's preferred memorials are to the Lutheran Heritage Foundation or Grace Lutheran Church.
