Our View: Higher education is becoming a buyer's market

A two-year tuition freeze has put community colleges in an even better competitive position with other schools.

At $164 per credit for general courses (there are higher fees for online, hybrid and independent study classes) at Rochester Community and Technical College and Riverland Community College in Austin, you're hard-pressed to find a better value in higher education. Tuition and fees at public community colleges average less than half of those at public, four-year colleges and about one-tenth of those at private, four-year colleges, according to the American Association of Community Colleges.
