The Austin School Board on Monday approved adding instructional days to the school calendar this year to make up for days that have been canceled because of cold or snowy weather.

The board unanimously approved designating Feb. 16 as a makeup day for Jan. 16, one of four schools days that have been canceled so far this school year as a result of extreme cold and snow.

The school calendar originally listed Feb. 16 as a day off in observance of Presidents Day.

The board also approved designating April 13 — one of three spring break days — as a backup instructional day in case there is an additional school cancellation before April 9.

Interim superintendent Bruce Anderson made the recommendations to the board.

“The overriding focus is kids learn when they are in school," said Anderson. “Every minute with our great teachers is important."

There will be flexibility for staff who already have made and paid for vacation plans on those days, said Anderson.

According to Anderson, administrators soon will be discussing whether to designate three makeup days for the 2009-2010 school year in case they are needed.

“We want to be proactive in case this weather pattern repeats next year," said Anderson. “We might be coming back before July with some selections in that regard."
