CENTURY

Head coach: Steve Larsen. Assistant coaches: Matt Onken, Chris McKane.

Last year's record: Century finished 3-6 in the Big Nine, 10-17 overall.

Outlook: Century has hopes of taking a significant leap over last year, when it finished 3-6 in the Big Nine and 10-17 overall. Century’s individual success a year ago wasn’t reflected in that record. The Panthers had six wrestlers with 27 wins or more. All but one of them returns this season.

Individual breakdown: Century coach Steve Larsen believes his team has at least five wrestlers with star potential, and even more with good chances of finishing with winning records. The potential stars are the five returning who won at least 27 matches last year — senior Ben Ginther (152), junior D.J. Tenney (119), junior Corey Zastrow (135), eighth-grader Chad Zastrow (135), and sophomore Colt Jones (145). Ginther fell in overtime in the Section 1AAA title match last year, then didn’t get to state after losing in the true-second match. Tenney also landed third in the section. Ginther is ranked fourth in the state at 152, Tenney fifth at 112 and Corey Zastrow eighth at 145, though he’ll likely wrestle at 140. Larsen also likes what he sees from senior Andre Davis (171), who is back after not wrestling the last couple of years. Also promising are 275-pound senior Charlie Wolff and 145-pound senior Isaac Kuecker.

Coach says: “We just keep getting better every year. I look to get better one more time." — Steve Larsen

JOHN MARSHALL

Head coach: Brad Haugen. Assistants: Rick Robison, Tom Giordano, Josh Grant.

Last year: JM finished 6-3 in the Big Nine, tied for third overall, and 15-7 overall. The Rockets set a school record for wins in a season.

Outlook: JM coach Brad Haugen is looking to build on last year, and wants even more individual success throughout his program. JM had one wrestler make it to the state tournament a year ago, current senior Pat Swayze. He was JM’s first state tournament entrant in five years. Haugen believes the Rockets can get more individuals to state this season. As for improving on that 6-3 Big Nine and 15-7 overall record, he thinks it might be tough, figuring a number of teams will be gunning for JM this year.

Individual breakdown: Swayze, who will wrestle at either 189 or 215 pounds this year, is the obvious star of this team. But there are a number of other JM wrestlers who aren’t far behind. Nate Redmann is one of the best in Minnesota to have not wrestled in a state tournament. The 125-pound senior barely missed going last year. The two from Section 1AAA who did make it finished second and third at state, respectively. Senior Mike Zenz (145) is another dominant JM wrestler. He finished with 31 wins last year (13 by pin, 10 by technical fall). Others to watch are senior 135-pounder Allen Vanderwiel, 275-pound junior Andrew Peterson, and 160-pound junior Matt Rud.

Coach says: “Our No. 1 goal is to match or better our individual performances from a year ago." — Brad Haugen

MAYO

Head coach: Dwight Gingerich. Assistants: Kent Perlich, Bob Snyder, Art Trimble.

Last year: Mayo finished 4-5 in the Big Nine, 7-17 overall.

Outlook: Mayo is still lacking depth — it will likely forfeit two matches per dual — but it has some strong individual talent. Mayo coach Dwight Gingerich is not eyeing how many duals his teams wins as much as how much individual success each of his wrestlers has. He has put together a rugged schedule to achieve that, including wrestling in the Minnesota Christmas Tournament, at an Owatonna quadrangular, and at the Coon Rapids Invitational. The Spartans have 23 wrestlers on the team, all but three of whom were on the squad last year.

Individual breakdown: The best of Mayo’s bunch is 152-pound senior Matt Mauseth, who landed second at state at 145 pounds last year. Mauseth has now been to state three times, finishing second twice and fourth once. He is on pace to become Rochester’s all-time winningest wrestler. Another returning state tournament entrant from a year ago is 119-pound freshman Mike Minske. Minske, who fell in the wrestlebacks, was Mayo’s youngest all-time state participant. He is ranked fourth in the state at 119. Others to watch for are sophomore Jake Minske (171, third at the Section 1AAA meet last year), sophomore Zach Hanson (160), and sophomore heavyweight Kevin Kimlinger. Gingerich describes Hanson as one of the toughest kids he’s coached, and Kimlinger as much improved.

Coach says: “We have some guys who are going to be very tough to beat." — Dwight Gingerich
