Zakaria Gaal has thrived since coming to Rochester in 1997. The Somali immigrant, who held a law degree in his native land, has landed a job with a local law firm, bought a house, volunteers with the Rochester school and court systems, and is devout in his Muslim faith.

'What's it going to be in my life?'
Jorge Solis's days on the run from the Immigration and Naturalization Service are long over. He has three children in local schools and, as the owner of two of southern Minnesota's most popular Mexican restaurants, the Fiesta Mexicana in Rochester and Red Wing, he employs more than 30 workers. Most important, though, is Jorge's unofficial position as a role model, a personal adviser and "padrone" in Rochester's community of 1,500 Hispanic immigrants.

Phengta Phetsarath began her journey to Rochester by sewing $100 into the waistband of her skirt, saying a prayer to Buddha and giving her husband a hard choice. It was 1980. She had decided to flee Laos and its communist government, which had abducted her sister in the middle of the night.
