LAKEVILLE — Rochester Mayo contained Lakeville North's greatest weapon, but then another one emerged to end the Spartans' boys basketball season on Wednesday night.
Top seed Lakeville North got a big game from a reserve player and beat Mayo 79-50 in a Section 1AAAA quarterfinal game. Mayo, the No. 8 seed, finished 7-17.
North sophomore Calven Pesola came off the bench and scored 23 points, making 7-of-9 shots from 3-point range. The Panthers (22-5) had a big 12-3 edge in 3-pointers and won for the eighth time in their last nine games.
"Our biggest problem was Pesola; he came in and got hot off the bench, and we really got hurt by him," said Mayo head coach Shaun Lang.
Lang said Mayo did a good job defensively on Lakeville North star J.P. Macura, a 6-foot-5 senior guard who finished with 17 points, half of his season average.
"Macura was our biggest concern and our kids executed well in trying to limit him," Lang said. "We contained the one we really wanted to contain, but we couldn't cover them all."
Mayo was led by junior forward Dan Jech with 18 points and 11 rebounds, and senior guard Alex Gatzlaff with 15 points and nine rebounds.
Lang said Lakeville North was more aggressive around the basket and out-rebounded Mayo.
"They were just more physical," he said. "They had 11 offensive rebounds and got a lot of second shots."
Mayo finished the season on a four-game losing skid, but Lang was happy with his team's effort throughout the season. Five seniors played their last game for the Spartans.
"It was a challenging season, but I just had a wonderful group of kids to work with and I was grateful for that," Lang said.
