Rochester restaurant-goers have a new way to show their support for businesses through the start of next week -- and it won't require them to give the 'shirt off their back.'

Whistle Binkies staffer Savannah Byers, whose father has part ownership of the restaurant, wanted to do something to raise money for local restaurants, as well as benefit the medical community.

So she designed a “507 Strong” logo to be printed on $15 t-shirts.

Five dollars from each “507 Strong” shirt purchased will be used to buy from seven Rochester restaurants -- The Loop, Smoak BBQ, Forager Brewery, Five West, Victoria’s Ristorante and Wine Bar, and both Whistle Binkies locations.

So far, Byers has sold more than 700 of the shirts, raising more than $3,000.

That far exceeds her initial estimate of “maybe 50” sales to friends and family members.

“It’s been pretty crazy,” Byers said. “The community has been very supportive.”

Reopening won't mean business as usual

The fundraiser went live April 17 and will end on May 4. After all of the proceeds have been tallied, the funds allotted to the restaurants will be split evenly into gift cards and meals from those establishments, to be delivered to the Mayo Clinic Civic Center, Zumbro Valley Health Center, Family Service Rochester, the Ronald McDonald House, and Gift of Life Transplant House, Byers said.

The t-shirts, sold through Campus Ink Printing, will also wait to be printed until after May 4.
