This Saturday, punk fans have the chance to catch seven bands playing an outdoor show at Thesis Beer Project from 2 to 11 p.m.
In addition to the loud sounds of Rochester favorites Local Sports, fresh off the August release of their new “Birdwatching” EP, Punktoberfest will also feature music from six other bands including Glowingtide (newcomers to the Rochester music scene), Maudlin, The Shackletons, Faith Boblett, Honey Dick, and Vial.
The lineup includes everything from riot grrrl riffs to noise-pop punches.
“We picked each of the seven bands to jive together in a good way while also giving everyone something to listen to, whether you're into sludgy garage rock, pop-punk, shoegaze, or just good, old-fashioned loud rock n' roll,” Treedome co-founder Nathaniel Nelson said.
Punktoberfest partially came about because Treedome was unable to host their usual large Winona-based street festival, Shut Down Third Street, due to the pandemic.
Wanting to focus on safer events instead, Treedome organized several smaller shows like Punktoberfest.
After talking the idea over with Adam Fredericksen and the Local Sports guys, Nelson said the fest started to take shape.
“Punktoberfest came out of us getting a little carried away,” he said. “We thought it'd be a wicked way to do an Oktoberfest event without following the same format as everyone else, and bring a bunch of amazing acts from around the region together for a big ol’ party.”
Punktoberfest features local and regional talent, which is something that both Treedome and Thesis Beer Project prides themselves on.
The event will also showcase new music and bands that newcomers to the local music scene might not have seen before.
“This is all about bringing together some of our favorites for a good time,” Nelson said. “You don't get many chances to see a good punk show in town.”
Punktoberfest is presented by Treedome, Local Sports (also performing at the fest), and Thesis Beer Project.
Production company Treedome has recently moved from Winona to Rochester — you can see their brick and mortar location on South Broadway in October.
