Field day examines cover crops

LAMBERTON, Minn. — The latest research and information about cover crops will be shared by University of Minnesota researchers and educators at the field day Cover Crops: Setting up for Success on Aug. 20 at the Southwest Research and Outreach Center in Lamberton.

Management tips,  matching your cover crop to your goals, fertilizer, pests and soil health are among the topics.

Check-in will start at 8:30 and the program will run from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The $25 registration fee includes lunch, refreshments and handouts.

Officials take part in Iowa fair activities

DES MOINES — Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds and Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig will take part in events at the Iowa State Fair this week.

The fair runs through Aug. 18.

Farm Environmental Leader Awards will be presented at 10 a.m. Wednesday by Reynolds, Naig and DNR Director Kayla Lyon to 53 Iowa farm families who take voluntary actions to improve or protect the environment and natural resources. The ceremony will be at the media center in the Putney Family Cattle Barn. 

EPA Assistant Administrator David Ross will join the award winners and state leader at a luncheon at 11:30 a.m. and is expected to make an announcement there. 

Naig will honor 332 Century and 153 Heritage Farm families during a day-long event on Thursday.

He will attend the scholarship picnic before attending the Sale of Champions at 1 p.m. Saturday n the Putney cattle barn.

Initiative celebrates Iowa’s farmers, ag products

DES MOINES — The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship has re-launched its Choose Iowa initiative, a program that aims to create support for farmers, drive demand for ag products and generate excitement about ag innovation.

Choose Iowa first launched in 2007 as a labeling program for locally-grown products. It has evolved into a platform to share stories about Iowa agriculture.

AIowa leads the nation in corn, pork, egg and renewable fuel production.

A Choose Iowa booth at the State Fair showcases Iowa farm goods and encourages consumers to choose Iowa products.
