Beulah "Mae" Peterson, 89, of Harmony, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011, after a 26-year battle with cancer.

She was born May 18, 1922, in Dunnell, to Victor and Hulda (Krantz) Peterson. She was baptized in the Dunnell Lutheran Church. She and her family relocated to the Morris, Minn., Alta Vista, Iowa, and Cresco, Iowa, areas to farm. She graduated from Cresco High School in 1939 where she received her Normal Training and taught in the Iowa Rural School System before and during her marriage. On June 26, 1943, she married Wilbur "Bill" Peterson at the Harmony State Line Church. Together they moved to Washington state where she worked for the American Red Cross as a social worker during WWII. They returned to Harmony in 1947 to start a business and raise their family. She returned to the workforce in 1963 to work for HECO for 25 years as a sewing department supervisor. After retiring, she and her husband Bill owned and operated the Harmony Country Lodge Motel until they sold it in 1996.

Her family, church and community were always very important. She was a very active member of the Harmony United Methodist Church serving as Sunday School superintendent, Sunday School teacher, Bible school leader, MYF leader, church treasurer, and held many offices in the United Methodist Women’s group. She was also active in the Rebecca Lodge, Harmony Tourism, Meals on Wheels and the Harmony Area Cancer Support Group. She loved visiting with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as quilting, reading, crocheting, traveling, boating and, of course, coffee with friends.
