Blanche Root, 88, formerly of the Wykoff and Spring Valley area, died at Ostrander Care and Rehab in Ostrander.
Blanche W. Gilbert was born April 9, 1923, in Monticello, to Charles and Florence (Mead) Gilbert. She was united in marriage to Myron Root at the Methodist Church in Spring Valley on Dec. 19, 1945, and together they farmed in the Wykoff and Spring Valley area for many years. Blanche wore many hats in her long life. She was a teacher in a one-room country schoolhouse and worked in a California electronics plant during the war. At various times she picked apples, made corsages at the greenhouse, and worked for a dry cleaning business. During the 1970s she took training to become a nurse’s aide and worked many years at the Spring Valley Hospital and later at the nursing home there. But the job she held the longest was that of a homemaker on the farm, quietly caring for everything and everyone around her. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
In her free time, she loved growing flowers, reading books, riding horses and painting beautiful pictures.
