Almost three years after it added some weight to Rochester's southern belt line, Fat Willy'sbar and grill is bulking up.
While owner Bill Hendersonstill is working out some of the details, he said the popular hangout at 4325 Maine Ave. S.E. is definitely spreading out soon. The basic plan is to extend the eatery into more than 1,000 square feet of space open next to it in the Shoppes on Mainearea.
"We'll be able to add probably 20 to 35 more seats," he said. "It depends on whether we add some pool tables or not."
While that decision is being worked out, look for Henderson's mini-office in the back room to grow as part of the expansion.
No date has been set to start construction, but building permits have been filed with the city.
So things are rolling along well enough to drive an expansion?
"We've been busy. I really can't complain," he said.
Fat Willy's busiest season — spring/summer — is on the way. Look for the patio overlooking the Shoppes on Maine ponds and manmade waterfalls to heat up with the temperatures.
Henderson has plans to host regular classic car cruise-ins this summer, so that should rev things up a bit, too.
He has about 30 on staff at the restaurant, which is known for sandwich creations such as the Highway 63 and 52 Bleu burgers.
In case you are wondering, Henderson named his place after the classic 1941 Willys Coupe car, as well as his own silhouette.
A car/ garage-themed bar and grill fits in with the Shoppes on Maine area, which has Rochester Toyotanearby plus the very soon-to-open Mercedes of Rochesterdealership.
