Construction crews are digging up a lot of the parking lot in front of Rochester's River Center Plazashopping center.

That means there will be fewer parking spots in the massive lot along North Broadway.

It also means that coffee and bagelsare on the way for River Center Plaza. That's the mall formerly known as Northbrook, located across Broadway from the Silver Lake Shopping Center.

Developer Dr. Ajay Nerhais building a 2,500-square-foot building to house a new Caribou Coffeeand Einstein combo.

The proposed plans place the new shop toward the back of the River Center lot, not far from the Wendy'sfast food restaurant. That Wendy's is owned by Broadway Enterprises, which is led by Nerha.

The new Caribou/Einstein shop is slated to have a drive-through window to attract morning commuters looking for a caffeine and bagel fix on the way to work.

This new shop could spark a bagel battle in that area. Bruegger's Bagelsis already serving up its own bagels nearby at 102 Elton Hills Dr. NW. You can expect the cream cheese to start flying.

This Caribou/Einstein Bros. location will mirror a 2,500-square-foot one built last year in the Costcodevelopment area off of 19th Street Northwest. That shop was built by TJL Development, of St. Paul.

While construction is rolling pretty fast right now, it's hard to say when it might be completed. I'd estimate late fall at the earliest.

When the River Center location starts serving up lattes and frappes, it will be Rochester's 10th Caribou Coffee shop.
