The Mayo Clinic Board of Trustees has named a new public member during its recent quarterly meeting in Florida.

Biochemist Mary Sue Coleman, Ph.D. — named by Time as one of the "10 Best College Presidents" — is president emeritus of the University of Michigan and also previously served as president of the University of Iowa.

Coleman was chosen by President Obama to "help launch the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership, a national effort bringing together industry, universities and the federal government," according to a Mayo news release.

She also is a member of the boards of directors of Johnson & Johnson and Meredith Corp., and serves on the Advisory Committee to the director of the National Institutes of Health.

The Mayo Board of Trustees is responsible for Mayo's systemwide patient care, education and research.
