The leaves are changing color and there’s a distinct chill in the air, which means it’s peak season for unfortunate vehicular encounters with animals. According to Farmers Insurance in Woodland Hills, California, more than a third (36 percent) of all auto claims involving collisions with wildlife occur in the fall.
"The onset of fall means drivers need to be on high alert for animals on and around the road, especially larger animals like deer and elk that can total a vehicle if struck at a high speed," says Paul Quinn, head of claims customer experience for Farmers Insurance.
To that end, Quinn advises motorists to be extra-cautious at dusk and dawn, when wildlife are most active; stay in the middle lane if you’re on a multilane highway; and drive at a pace that allows you to react quickly if an animal suddenly enters your path. And if you should hit an animal, pull over and call local law enforcement immediately.
