Heard on the Street: Apple store planned at mall

Rochester is home to a major IBM facility, but that doesn't mean we're all PC'ers. There's plenty of Macs, iPads, iPods, iPhones, iPretty Much Everythings here.

That makes it a natural for an Apple store, and FirstTech , which describes itself as Minnesota's "leading Apple specialist," plans to open one at Apache Mall this fall.

The Minneapolis-based company, which has a single store in the Uptown neighborhood, has been an Apple sales and service business since 1977 and claims to be the oldest Apple reseller in the world. Pete Paulsen, general manager and co-owner, said they plan to open a 3,100-square-foot store in early October that will occupy the spaces vacated by Lady Footlocker and Air Traffic.

"We'll sell the entire Apple product line with the exception of the iPhone," Paulsen said. "We've done a lot of market research and Rochester is probably the most exciting market in the area. There are great things going on in Rochester and we think it's a great opportunity for us."

The company advertised for a store manager in the P-B classifieds last week and plans to hire about 15 people. They'll have a service department on site to give TLC to all your Apple products, says marketing manager Allan Evans.
