Heard on the Street: Mayo Clinic hires national PR firm

Mayo Clinicis always a hot topic in the Med City, but its recent high-profile moves have brought even more state and national attention to the world-famous clinic.

To help manage how its messages are delivered on those stages, Mayo Clinic recently contracted with Widmeyer Communications, a high-powered PR firm based in Washington, D.C., and New York City.

The firm will manage national appearances and speaking engagements of CEO Dr. John Noseworthy and other Mayo Clinic leaders, according to a representative.

An article about the deal on PRWeek's website says Widmeyer will work with Mayo Clinic specifically on the Destination Medical Center initiative and the recent research center partnership in Massachusetts with Optum, a subsidiary of the UnitedHealth Group.

Virgil Dickson of PRWeek quotes Chris Gade, Mayo Clinic's chairman of the division of external relations, about Widmeyer.


"We're an organization with a 150-year history in medicine, medical research and education. As health care continues to change, we want to continue to be a resource for health care in the nation and around the world," Gade says. "One way to do that is identifying the appropriate forums and places for thought leadership."

Widmeyer is not Mayo Clinic's official agency of record, and the contract is for one year.

Widmeyer's website describes what kind of tasks the firm's health-care team handles.

"We have helped clients reposition themselves to better take advantage of market condition, successfully defended them against issues, rebranded their organizations, launched companywide social media plans and earned them national media attention."

The PRWeek article mentioned that Cleveland Clinic, one of Mayo Clinic's main competitors in the Destination Medical niche, hired a national PR firm seven months ago. Gade said that had nothing to do Mayo Clinic's move to contract Widmeyer.

"What motivated Mayo was what we are hoping to accomplish around the nation and internationally," he says in the PRWeek article.
