Mayo Clinic'soperations in Arizona have grown quickly.
Mayo Foundationwas rated the 26th largest employer in Arizona, with 5,727 employees, according to the Arizona Republic 100,a list of that state's largest employers. That's up from 5,600 in 2014, when it also was ranked 26th.
Mayo has an outpatient clinic and other facilities on its Scottsdale campus and a full-service hospital and transplant center on its Phoenix campus.
When the Mayo Clinic campus in Scottsdale opened in 1987, it employed 42 doctors and a 220-person support staff. Ten years later, in 1997, it had almost 200 doctors and a support staff of 1,500.
The Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix,which has 268 beds and 21 operating rooms, opened in the fall of 1998 as the first hospital designed and built by Mayo Clinic.
